The Michigan Dog Man

This is the first time I've come across the Michigan Dog Man, saw the video bellow and found it pretty interesting so decided to do a little research, not much mind you.

The Michigan Dog Man wiki goes into the history a little but for the most part talks about a song that was inspired by the the legend called funnily enough "The Legend". The video known as The Gable Film points to this site The Legend of Michigan's Dogman which along with some information is selling a 2-disc set of the song with extras.

This is where I get a little confused, it seems the video below has been taken off of youtube quite a bit, something to do with copyright and from some of the discussions I've read there seems to be some different footage that gets taken down also.

It's kind of hard to track any solid info down about the vid, as the "origin is not entirely known", as far as I can tell it's promotion for the box set, but it's pretty cool anyhow.

The video looks old school and they point those facts out in the video, the cool stuff happens at the end when the camera is close to the creature, to me it looked like a man on all fours, but when it gets its stride going looks more like an animal, kind of like a gorilla or a dog with added hair? the video ends in a Blair Witch moment.

I have a feeling I've seen the video before, but I can't be sure, probably do more research on the subject, kind of reminds me of the Mothman stories.

Update: A search for Mindstage Productions brings up very little and a search for Blue Moon Studios brings up some pretty random results and I can't be sure of any that are related to the video.

Here's an enhancement of the creature in action, slowed down and repeated.

Update: Cryptomundo has been on the case of this video quite a lot, check out their findings below.

I can't believe it could be anything other than staged but I love it nonetheless! Yeah, very Blair Witch-like ending, too. It's funny how old, grainy film makes things that much more creepy.

Very clever film footage. I see a cult film brewing with this one.

Have you ever seen footage of a silverback gorilla???? It's a gorilla, not a dogman.

Not to be a party pooper but the only real question is whether this was filmed in the 70's (pretty cool and ahead of it's time in some ways) or recently (great fake vintage look). There is no way a "dogman" is out there in Michigan and I don't think it was a gorilla either. Just good old fashion fakery - I mean how hard would it be for a dude to crouch on all fours and wear some sort of coat or something to duplicate this (there is no detail whatsoever of this "creature".) But entertaining, no question about it!

  6. I think this one's been nailed down to viral marketing for their CD/DVD pack out for sale at their site. However, it's certainly clever enough, and has a plausible enough back story that a lot of people are talking about it. Personally, I'm going with the "dog with a bear hide strapped to its back" theory, but I guess you never know!

I don't know what to make of it. The music was well chosen though.

  8. lol, when I think of a dog man I think of a hairy man on all fours, that's what's in the video.

Ah I don't know, cult film for sure Lotgk.

Now a werewolf would be so much cooler, when I think of werewolf I see an American werewolf in London type of thing or some man in a trance eating raw meat.

i think the legend is quite interesting, whether it is real or not i dont know. I find it interesting that nearly all the descriptions of the people claiming to have seen this creature(s) seem to be about the same, around 6ft7 to 7ft, yellow eyes, built upper body, hunched, and backward knees(k9 style), i would like to think that the gables film would be real, but unfortunately it loses me at the ending, because i think the angle in which the dogman attacks would have damaged the camera.

There are some things we are not ready to understand. It's not just a back story; it's an American Indian legend, especially in Michigan.

the footage was supposedly found in a box of odds and ends at an estate sale several years ago. who know where the film was actually shot. it appears to be a gorilla so either it was at a free range zoo or it was someone's pet.

  14. its not guerilla. look at the teeth. guerillas do have canines but but as much as the creature in this video. also its cant be human because of the way it turns so suddenly. if it was a human u would see a wobble when it turns since we arent made to walk like that.

  15. Ok ive bein following this footage for a while now and i cant tell you what it is but if hear one more person say that that is a gorrilla or a baboon im goin to get a lobotomy and drown in the same sea if of natural world ignorance that alot of other people seem to be in. This is no gorrilla its extended leg at the begining kills that idea and the way it seems to run after the shift is canine. all four points of contact before leap. Second have any of your people actually seen a baboon in the wild? thats more ridiculous than calling it a werewolf in my eyes. Baboons are very native to sub sahara. Note the snow and the fur build and size? think before speaking and youll have a better life. thank you

I've seen a few bear, and the original movement is not unusual. The shorter front legs and longer back legs make them sort of scamper in a simian like way when they move to the side. The odd thing is the violence of the attack. To me, it could be a large black bear, but we've lived along side them in Michigan for a long time without any trouble. And the man he killed (if you've seen the aftervid, its the same guy with the axe earlier in this vid) is very large, not a prime suspect for a black bear attack. Also, the missing lower half of the body seems odd, as a bear would devour the torso first (I really don't know, it seems like it would make sense). Lastly, bears have a habit of bearing the food that they scavenge upon.
Despite the discrepancy, I have to go with black bear.

It is a fake film, MonsterQuest interviewed the guy that made the film. He is a collector of vintage 70's vehicles. He even used a camera from the 1970s to make the video look old.
